Walking Safari Advice

How a walking day works and who it suits.

Walking travel advice

For health questions, a travel clinic has the final word. For visas, check the embassy of each country on the route.

Lion Camp, South Luangwa, Zambia
  1. 1.The walk

Walks leave early, last two to four hours, and move at the pace of what the guide finds. You walk in single file behind a licensed guide and an armed scout. You will not cover much ground; that is the point.

  2. 2.Who can walk

Most camps set a minimum age of 12 to 16 for walks. You need to be able to walk a few kilometres on uneven ground in warm weather. Say on the quote if anyone has a condition the guide should know about.

  3. 3.Season

Zambia's walking camps open from roughly June to October, when the grass is low and the rivers are down. Mana Pools follows the same calendar. Outside those months the itineraries use drives instead.

    Travel by month
  4. 4.What to wear

Neutral colours, long trousers, closed shoes with grip, a hat. Bright colours and strong scents are asked against. The camp supplies water and a briefing.

  5. 5.Still a safari

Walking routes keep their game drives and, on the Lower Zambezi, their canoe mornings. Read each stay for which activities are included.

Quick facts

Walking safaris here are the Zambia and Zimbabwe plans where a walk or a canoe day sits beside the game drives. The activity is included when the stay says so.

  • On foot with a guide

A walking day is a guided walk in the park named on that stay. It is not a self-guided hike.

  • Canoe days in the same spirit

Lower Zambezi and similar stays sometimes put you on the water. The day text says which mornings those are.

  • Drives still happen

A walking route is rarely only walking. Full safari days that list drives still include them.

  • The quote confirms the camp

If a mobile camp moves with the walk, the quote is what holds the departure and the camp.

What every trip on this site includes

  • Published rates are per person sharing, in US dollars, shown in the currency you choose while browsing.
  • Nights, meals and the activities named on each stay are inside the rate. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and unlisted drinks are not.
  • No single-room supplement is charged, and children pay the same per-person rate as adults.
  • Wildlife sightings are never promised. Guides, parks and seasons are chosen to give the best chance; the animals decide the rest.
  • Gorilla itineraries include one permit per person per trek unless the page says two.
  • A written quote comes first. Nothing is booked and nothing is paid until you accept it.
