Kruger is the park people mean when they say they want a classic South African safari: a huge lowveld, the Big Five, and a choice between driving yourself and staying in a private reserve next door.

It doesn’t get much better than a Kruger Park safari. Home to the widest diversity of wildlife in South Africa and delivering some of the finest game viewing in the world, Kruger offers award-winning accommodation, smooth-running logistics and some of Africa’s best trackers and guides, ready to take you on Big 5 game drives and thrilling walking safaris.

If ticking off seeing the Big 5 – leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo – is on your bucket list, then choose a Kruger safari. It's not unusual to see all five in one day. As one of the oldest conservation areas in Africa, Kruger regularly delivers fantastic wildlife sightings with healthy populations of sought-after species like cheetah and wild dog plus excellent birding.
Kruger is ideal because of its excellent infrastructure, good travel network, professional guides and superb service. If you need creature comforts like Wi-Fi, air conditioning, exclusive-use vehicles or private plunge pools, then Kruger's accommodation offers plenty to choose from. If you love being active on vacation, then Kruger's lodges offer a wide variety of activities such as archery, wine tasting, star gazing, tennis, cooking lessons, yoga and specialist photography courses.
Just as Kruger is ideal for every type of traveller, it also lends itself to celebrations. Honeymooners will love the star beds and romantic sundowners while multi-generational families with children will feel safe and secure in fenced lodges with kids' clubs. Whether it's a marriage, an anniversary, a graduation or a family reunion, Kruger has enough accommodation and budget options to suit every occasion. Plus, there is much to do outside Kruger such as playing golf, going hot-air ballooning, visiting animal sanctuaries and hiking natural beauty spots.

The Kruger offers top-notch classic safaris where expert guides and trackers go in search of the Big 5 in customised 4×4 vehicles. For the truly adventurous, lodges like Rhino Post in the national park, Africa on Foot in Klaserie and Ngala Safari Lodge in Timbavati offer walking safaris, where your game drives can be replaced by venturing out on your own steam with a guide to discover Kruger's fascinating ecosystem.
For genuine exclusivity, low visitor numbers and sensational game viewing, we recommend a safari in Kruger’s private reserves including the Sabi Sands, Thornybush and Singita’s concessions. Leading the way in luxury safaris, these exclusive-use conservation areas are world famous for their virtually guaranteed Big 5 sightings.
The Greater Kruger area is one of the most easily reachable wildlife areas in Africa. After jetting into the main hub of OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can either take a short-haul flight onto one of the three airports outside Kruger or be driven in air-conditioned comfort. Once you're there, moving between lodges is by vehicle, which doubles as a game drive. The private reserves are compact and transfer times are comparatively short, meaning you spend more time on safari and less time travelling. The plethora of air connections allow you to easily merge your Kruger safari with other destinations.

A true heavyweight among Africa’s parks and reserves and weighing in at a shade under 20 000 km², the Kruger National Park is roughly the size of Israel or Wales and spans two of South Africa’s provinces. The park itself is however just one of the four elements that make up the Greater Kruger National Park, and travellers planning their Kruger safari should be familiar with the physical make-up of this extraordinary destination.

An extravagantly scenic region to the west of the Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route is a rugged, mountainous country, scored with deep gorges and breathtaking views but is well served by easy roads and small, friendly towns. There are many places of interest throughout the Panorama Route – highlights include the Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window and the traditional village of Pilgrim’s Rest.
It’s where to go for a day or two of pure relaxation after all those crack-of-dawn starts in the Kruger and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes down to somewhere to stay: accommodation on the Panorama Route ranges from world-class spas and luxurious retreats to family-friendly lodges and safari lodges. And if you do have energy left over from your safari, the Panorama Route is famous for its wealth of sporting and adventure activities – golf, cultural tours, horse-riding and quad biking are among the most popular.

South Africa’s largest, most diverse and oldest conservation area is simply known as ‘Kruger’ and refers to the national park itself, managed by the government parastatal SANParks and open to the public.
Straddling both Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces, the Kruger National Park is fully fenced, has an extensive network of tarred and gravel roads and is home to a wide range of accommodation and visitor facilities, most of which are located in the south and central regions where game viewing is traditionally better.

Running along much of the Kruger’s western boundary are a number of privately owned and run game reserves, usually grouped in large blocks and then divided into individual reserves.
No longer fenced off from the park, these conservation-minded reserves include some of the best and biggest brand names in safari travel such as Sabi Sabi, Thornybush, Londolozi and Mala Mala, and they offer what many consider to be the ultimate African safari.
Not only is the accommodation, management and guiding astonishingly good but your chances of seeing the Big 5 are virtually guaranteed. There are fewer restrictions than in the park so with off-road driving, guided nature walks and night drives permitted, you will get every opportunity to spot animals, which in any case tend to be more habituated to people, allowing for closer and more frequent sightings.

Run along similar lines to the private reserves, the Kruger Park’s private concessions are exclusive-use areas contained within the park itself. Game viewing tends to be spectacular, and the standard of accommodation and guiding in the concessions is exceptionally high with activities such as off-road driving for close-up sightings, night drives and bush walks allowed.
Although private concessions offer a very similar luxury safari experience to the private reserves, staying in one means that game drives may venture into the Kruger National Park which will suit visitors who want to explore the heart of the park.

The best time to visit the Kruger National Park is the dry season from May to October for the best game viewing and walking safari conditions. Vegetation is low and sparse at this time of year, making animals easier to spot and track, while the permanent water sources offer a rewarding safari experience in the Kruger.
Generally considered a year-round destination, choosing exactly when to go to the Kruger depends on what you want to experience. The Kruger has two distinct seasons, the dry winter from May to October, and the summer rainy season from November to April. However, every day in the Kruger National Park is a one-of-a-kind safari adventure.
January is the height of the rainfall season in the Kruger Park. The days are hot and very humid with impressive thunderstorms occurring in the late afternoons. The wet weather makes the landscape colourful as the marula trees begin to bear fruit. This is a good time for birdwatchers to visit the park as lesser spotted eagles can be seen frequently.
The summer rains continue in February while the climate remains warm and humid. This is the breeding season for waterbuck and a great time to be experiencing Kruger National Park tours. Birding in the park is very popular in February as the migrant species have settled in the area, while the breeding birds are in full plumage.
March marks the end of the summer season in the Kruger Park and this is generally the last month of heavy rainfall. The vegetation in the park is dense which can make it a little more difficult to spot the animals at times, but with the expert guides on hand, tracking the wildlife will all be part of the safari experience while on a visit to the Kruger. A major highlight in March are the kudu and buffalo breeding seasons.
The best time to visit the Kruger National Park is at the beginning or end of the region’s dry season, which begins in April. This seasonal shift causes a noticeable drop in temperature throughout the park. The wildlife can be somewhat difficult to spot but sightings of impala, wildebeest and warthog are common as it's mating season in April for these species.
Autumn gives way to winter during May in the Kruger Park. The rain has ended but the autumn scenery starts to turn brown and leafless. The animals in the park begin to migrate to warmer areas and this is when elephants make their way from Zimbabwe and Mozambique to their winter grazing grounds in the north of the Kruger. It's an ideal opportunity to witness these animals migrating in their impressive herds.
June is both the coldest and driest month in the Kruger. Temperatures in the daytime are mild with low humidity, but the evenings do get rather cold. This is a time when the wildlife regularly congregates around permanent water sources, making wildlife sightings while on safari in the Kruger National Park a memorable experience. Because of the temperature drop, this is when the big cats, including the elusive leopard, become easier to spot.
July is one of the best times for game viewing in the Kruger National Park. The cooler weather and lower humidity make for pleasant weather. The north of the park receives fewer safari enthusiasts at this time of year as there is more wildlife activity in the south. The Sabie River is where to go in Kruger to see predators in action.
August is the middle of the dry season. Water sources for the animals are scarce but the best Kruger safari opportunities are in the southern regions of the park, where water is more readily available. August is a very comfortable time of year to visit the Kruger as there are fewer mosquitoes, little to no rain, temperatures are pleasantly warm in the day, and refreshingly cool in the evenings.
September and October often experience hot and humid conditions but concentrations of animals around water sources are at their highest. This period is often regarded as the best time for a safari in the Kruger National Park, particularly the southern and central regions. September marks the start of spring and October is usually the beginning of the rainfall season in the Kruger Park. It can get very hot in the day, with rainfall in the late evening. The grass starts to become greener and game viewing is still good as the bush is not too thick after the dry and dusty months.
The summer rains arrive in full force from November onwards, peak in January and February, and come to an end around April. The Kruger is transformed into a beautiful, thriving green landscape and it makes for superb photography. November is officially the start of the Green Season. Game viewing is still good, with many young summer-born animals around. It’s also the best time to visit the Kruger for birdwatching as well as safari-and-beach holiday combinations.
December this is the height of summer. Hot humid days usually end with spectacular thunderstorms in the early evening. We recommend consulting a medical practitioner for advice about malaria if you plan to visit the Kruger during the summer. The risk of malaria is low, but the region does lie within the malarial belt. If you want to avoid the crowds, we would further advise avoiding the southern/central Kruger during the long December and January school holidays – rather go to the far north of the park or the Kruger’s private reserves and concessions, for luxury lodges in the Kruger National Park region.

Keep it Safe: not only will you encounter large and potentially dangerous animals either when you are in a 4X4 vehicle or when on a walking safari, but accommodation in the Kruger National Park and its private reserves tends to be unfenced and it’s not unusual for wild animals to wander through camp. Listen carefully to the safety briefings given by your ranger and lodge manager, and feel free to request an escort to and from your tent at night.
Mind the Mosquitoes: the Kruger National Park lies within the malaria belt but the chances of contracting the disease are low, even during the rainy summer months (December to April) when mosquito numbers are at their highest. Nevertheless, you’re strongly advised to consult a medical practitioner before you visit the Kruger (especially if you are taking children) and to take necessary precautions to avoid being bitten while you’re there.
Wrap Up in Winter: with early morning temperatures barely above freezing in June and July, it’ll be colder than you think during Kruger’s mid-winter season. Bring a warm top and hat for morning and evening game drives – many lodges will also supply blankets your personal use during these activities.
Avoid School Holidays: the main public-access park can get very busy during South Africa’s long December and January summer holidays. We’d advise staying at one of Kruger’s private reserves or concessions to ensure a private and more intimate safari experience.
Do a Self-drive Safari: a mix of easy accessibility, excellent infrastructure and do-it-yourself game viewing makes self-drive safaris to the Kruger National Park and Panorama Route both a simple and rewarding option. Choose your itinerary from our suggestions or tailor-make your own – either way it’ll be a safari at your pace and set to your requirements.
For flight schedules, fares and booking terms, check directly with the airline or your chosen travel agent.
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport: located in Nelspruit, Kruger’s major airport is served by flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban while a flight from Vilanculos on the Mozambique coast means easy safari and beach holidays.
Hoedspruit Airport: fly into the Kruger’s second airport from Johannesburg or Cape Town for easy access to the park’s private reserves like the Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Thornybush.
Phalaborwa Airport: serving the wilder northern Kruger destinations, this small airport is accessed from Johannesburg only.
Private airstrips: it’s also possible to take charter flights straight from Johannesburg to bush airstrips in the Sabi Sands and several of the Kruger’s other private reserves.
Game drives and transfers to and from Kruger’s airports and airstrips are conducted in open-sided 4X4s. Guided walking safaris – ranging from a few hours with your guide to multi-day camping hikes – are permitted in the private reserves and certain sections of the Kruger National Park.
This is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your trip! The Kruger National Park is a massive public reserve managed by the government. It has paved roads, and visitors must stick strictly to these roads and abide by gate opening and closing times. It can get quite busy, especially during holiday seasons.
The Kruger private reserves (like Sabi Sands, Timbavati, and Thornybush) share an unfenced border with the national park, meaning the animals roam freely between them. However, the private reserves offer a highly exclusive experience. Here, you are treated to off-road driving to get up close to major sightings, night game drives with spotlights, and guided walking safaris, none of which are allowed in the main public park. Furthermore, vehicle numbers at wildlife sightings are strictly capped, ensuring you never feel crowded. Read more about the pros and cons of visiting a national park vs a private game reserve.
If you are taking a light aircraft charter flight directly from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) into one of the bush airstrips in the Sabi Sands or private reserves, strict luggage restrictions apply due to the size and weight limits of small planes.
You are generally limited to 15kg to 20kg (33lbs to 44lbs) of luggage per person, which must be packed in soft-sided bags with no rigid frames or wheels. Hard-shell suitcases simply cannot fit into the small aircraft baggage holds. Don’t worry about having to packing light though, almost all luxury safari lodges offer excellent, often complimentary, same-day laundry services.
To protect the pristine peace of the environment and the safety of the wildlife, the use of drones is strictly prohibited across the entire Kruger National Park and all surrounding private game reserves. Drones cause immense stress to wild animals – particularly rhino and elephant, who can become highly agitated by the buzzing sound – and unauthorized drones interfere with crucial anti-poaching operations. We highly recommend leaving the drone at home and investing in a high-quality zoom lens for your camera instead.
Kruger is one of Africa's absolute best family safari destinations, but individual lodges have strict policies regarding age limits for game drives to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort.
Generally, children under the age of 6 are not permitted on standard, shared game drives because long hours in an open vehicle require patience and quiet. However, many of our favorite family-friendly lodges offer specialized “Cub Clubs,” private villas with dedicated safari vehicles exclusively for your family, and shorter, tailored “Bumble Drives” specifically designed to keep younger children engaged and safe.
Apart from its breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife, the beauty of the Kruger National Park is that it’s so accessible. Just a few hours drive from Johannesburg and boasting its own international airport for easy connections to Cape Town and Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast, Kruger offers exceptional Big 5 game viewing and luxurious accommodation without being too far off the beaten track.
Moreover, a safari in the Kruger can be whatever you want it to be. Enjoy a romantic and decadent escape in one of Kruger’s legendary private reserves while enjoying a Kruger Park honeymoon safari or revel in the thrills of a guided walking safari and track big game on foot.
Our selection of Kruger Park tours and safaris also includes fly-in safaris for those who have less time to spare, affordable self-drive vacations for the independently-minded, and Kruger Park family safari complete with tailored kids activities.

The best way to experience the magic of the Kruger is to stay in one of the many safari lodges located within the park’s internal private concessions or in the private reserves that hug the Kruger’s western, unfenced border. Distinguished by excellent service and fine cuisine, our selection of private Kruger Park lodges and camps are the gold standard in Kruger National Park accommodation. Many have been the accommodation of choice for celebrities and royalty, and several lodges rank among the finest in Africa.
But these lodges don’t just offer luxurious accommodation. Besides superb general game viewing, visitors are virtually guaranteed sightings of the Big 5 and enjoy safari activities not normally permitted in the park itself such as night drives, guided nature walks and off-road driving.
Accommodation in Kruger also includes affordable tented camps, self-catering rest camps, family-friendly lodges and even rustic bush camps that focus on guided walking safaris. But if you’re looking for the ultimate in luxury, then one of our exclusive Kruger safari villas, hidden deep in the heart of the Big 5 country, will give you the wildlife experience of a lifetime.

A self-drive rest-camp week costs less than a private-reserve week because you are not paying a guide, a tracker, and a light vehicle for every drive.
Dry-season private camps are the expensive Kruger. Green-season rates drop. A Cape Town add-on is a city hotel, not another safari night.
