Choose an Akagera safari & experience the magical Akagera National Park, the first Big 5 safari park in Rwanda.

Thanks to continuous efforts to restore wildlife populations and implementing strict anti-poaching laws, Akagera National Park in Rwanda has become the largest protected wetland in central Africa and a sanctuary for savannah-adapted animals. After the reintroduction of eastern black rhinos and lions, Akagera is now once again a Big 5 safari park and also a convenient stopover before or after a gorilla-trekking experience.
After successfully reintroducing southern white rhinos in 2021, more were introduced to the park in June 2025 as part of the Rhino Rewild Initiative. With wildlife thriving, there is plenty to see on the ground, but the skies also draw significant attention with around 500 recorded species – including the rare, prehistoric-looking shoebill stork.

A safari in Akagera National Park promises a myriad of interesting ecosystems, from sprawling savannahs and acacia woodlands to rolling hills and glistening lakes, all providing spectacular backdrops for its thriving wildlife. So, why visit Akagera National Park? Allow us to extrapolate.
Not only is Akagera National Park a flagship in terms of successful conservation stories, it is also a sublime safari destination that enjoys less crowds than its popular East African counterparts – the likes of Kenya and Tanzania. As Akagera is also on the smaller side, it allows for comprehensive exploration in a shorter amount of time. Despite its size, its offers an enthralling array of wildlife species, as well as a whopping 174 recorded butterfly species.
Thanks to effective and enthusiastic conservation efforts, Akagera National Park has slowly rebuilt and now offers an impressive wildlife populous. Now, game drives provide the privileged possibility of seeing every member of the Big 5, particularly leopard and elephant, as well as giraffe, hippos, antelopes, and even the odd primate. In terms of community, the park supports local businesses and initiatives as well as meeting with over 18,000 members of the community each year to discuss continued conservation and human-wildlife conflict. This has contributed to their accolade of no losses in any high-value species from poaching since 2010.
Considered to be one of central East Africa's most scenic parks brimming with biodiversity, Akagera National Park offers visitors a well-rounded safari experience. While its favoured as a year-round destination, the best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to September. As one of Africa's more wild destinations, Rwanda features sensational vistas over its untouched landscapes and offers a sense of exclusivity and peace due to fewer crowds. Unlike its ever-popular East Africa neighbours, like Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, the pace here is slower, perhaps a little less refined, but teeming with wildlife and activities to be enjoyed. Here are a few of our top picks:

Discover the truly wild nature of Rwanda, either alone or combined with other sensational destinations, and relax into a slower safari pace. If you're ready to explore Akagera's top accommodations and activities, reach out to one of our Africa Safari Experts who are always on hand to help.

AkageraThe park itself, a few hours' drive east of Kigali. Sleep inside or on the edge so the morning drive is not spent on the road.
VolcanoesThe gorilla park in the north-west. Do not drop a night there to squeeze Akagera in if the permit morning would then start with a 4 a.m. transfer.
The drier months. The grass is shorter and the lakeside game is easier to see. These are also the months when gorilla permits are hardest to get, so book the trek first.

A second drier window. Warm, and still a sensible time to combine the two parks.

April, May, and the short rains turn the park green. Tracks can be slow. The wildlife does not leave.

Akagera is lower and warmer than Kigali, and it is a malaria area. See a clinic. The gorilla highlands are a separate question.

The drive from Kigali is the easy way in. Do not land and try to do Akagera and a gorilla trek on the same day.

Another conservation success story for Rwanda: Akagera is once-again becoming a Big 5 safari destination thanks to the careful reintroduction of lions. This a great destination to combine with gorilla trekking as it allows you savannah game viewing in terrain that is completely different to the forests of Volcanoes and Nyungwe National Parks.

Akagera is the smaller line on a Rwanda quote. The gorilla permit is still the large one if the volcanoes are included.
Two nights plus the road transfer is the fair shape. International flights into Kigali, and the permit if you add it, sit outside a room rate.
