Malaria-Free Safari Advice

Practical notes for travellers who want to avoid prophylaxis. This page is not medical advice.

Malaria-Free travel advice

For health questions, a travel clinic has the final word. For visas, check the embassy of each country on the route.

The coast outside Cape Town, South Africa
  1. 1.Which regions are usually listed as malaria-free

South Africa's Eastern Cape reserves, Madikwe, Cape Town, the winelands, the Whale Coast and the Garden Route are generally regarded as malaria-free, as are the Seychelles and Mauritius and much of Namibia's desert and coast. A travel clinic confirms the current position for your dates.

  2. 2.Who chooses this

Families with young children, travellers who are pregnant or planning to be, and anyone whose medication does not mix with prophylaxis. It is also a simpler trip: no tablets, no timing.

  3. 3.Still take precautions

Low risk is not no risk, and mosquitoes carry other things. Long sleeves at dusk, repellent and a net where one is provided are sensible everywhere in Africa.

  4. 4.If you want the Mara or the Serengeti

East Africa's parks sit inside the malaria zone. If those are the dream, the clinic can advise on prophylaxis that suits you, and the Big 5 and migration collections are the place to look.

  5. 5.Insurance and vaccines

Travel insurance, visas and clinic visits sit outside the rate on every trip. Yellow fever rules change by country; check them for every country you pass through, not just the one you stay in.

Quick facts

These routes favour the Cape, Namibia, the islands, and other places travellers often choose because they sit outside the usual malaria zones. This is not medical advice. A travel clinic confirms what you need.

  • The place comes first

The itinerary names the country and the park. Use that, plus a clinic, to decide. The page does not certify a park as risk-free.

  • The Cape and the desert

Cape Town, the winelands, and much of Namibia appear here because of where they are, not because of an award.

  • Islands are on the list too

Seychelles and Mauritius sit with the malaria-free routes. Diving and beach days are described on those stays.

  • Insurance stays outside the rate

Travel insurance, visas, and clinic visits are excluded, the same as on every other trip.

What every trip on this site includes

  • Published rates are per person sharing, in US dollars, shown in the currency you choose while browsing.
  • Nights, meals and the activities named on each stay are inside the rate. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and unlisted drinks are not.
  • No single-room supplement is charged, and children pay the same per-person rate as adults.
  • Wildlife sightings are never promised. Guides, parks and seasons are chosen to give the best chance; the animals decide the rest.
  • Gorilla itineraries include one permit per person per trek unless the page says two.
  • A written quote comes first. Nothing is booked and nothing is paid until you accept it.
