Big 5 Safari Advice
What to know before a safari built around lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
Big 5 travel advice
For health questions, a travel clinic has the final word. For visas, check the embassy of each country on the route.

1.The best time for a Big 5 safari
Dry months concentrate animals at water and thin the grass, so June to October is the easiest window in the Kruger, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and July to October in Kenya and Tanzania. Private reserves with off-road driving are forgiving year-round. A sighting is never promised in any month.
Travel by month2.Private reserve or national park
Private reserves beside the Kruger, the Mara conservancies and Botswana's concessions allow off-road driving, night drives and walking, with a limit on vehicles at a sighting. National parks are larger, cheaper and busier. Many itineraries use one of each.
3.Malaria-free Big 5 options
South Africa's Eastern Cape reserves and Madikwe are Big 5 reserves outside the main malaria belt, which suits families with young children and anyone who prefers to skip prophylaxis. A travel clinic confirms what you need for the exact places on your quote.
4.Safety on game drives
Guides brief you before the first drive: stay seated, keep voices low, no standing or leaning out. Animals see the vehicle as one shape, which is why that rule matters. At night in camp you are walked to your room by staff. Follow those two habits and the risk is small.
5.Walking in Big 5 country
A guided walk is the best way to understand tracks and the smaller things a vehicle rolls past. Where a stay lists a walk, it is led by a licensed guide with an armed scout. Children under 12 or 16 are usually not allowed to walk; the camp sets that rule.
Quick facts
These routes are built around the parks where lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino are the reason for the drive. A sighting is never promised. The quote names the reserves and the nights.
Classic parks, named on the page
Kruger, the Mara, the Serengeti, Chobe, and the private reserves beside them appear because the itinerary stays there, not because a list said they should.
Two drives on a full safari day
Where the stay lists a morning game drive and an afternoon game drive, that is what the published rate is built from. Extra activities stay optional until the quote says otherwise.
Park fees sit inside the rate
Conservancy and park fees named on the itinerary are included. International flights, visas, and tips are not.
The month still matters
Dry months make the grass shorter in many of these parks. The travel-by-month notes say which season that place usually prefers.
What every trip on this site includes
- Published rates are per person sharing, in US dollars, shown in the currency you choose while browsing.
- Nights, meals and the activities named on each stay are inside the rate. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and unlisted drinks are not.
- No single-room supplement is charged, and children pay the same per-person rate as adults.
- Wildlife sightings are never promised. Guides, parks and seasons are chosen to give the best chance; the animals decide the rest.
- Gorilla itineraries include one permit per person per trek unless the page says two.
- A written quote comes first. Nothing is booked and nothing is paid until you accept it.
