The drier months, which are also when gorilla permits are hardest to get. Plan the permit first.

Time
Do not add Kivu by taking a night away from the gorilla lodge if it means a 4 a.m. drive to the trailhead.
Health
Rwanda's gorilla region and the lake are a malaria question for a clinic. Kigali is not automatically the same.
