Visiting the Constantia Wine Valley
The Constantia Wine Route has a rich wine-making heritage dating back to the late 17th century, making it the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa.
Today, the original estate has been divided into eight smaller farms, the most famous being Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Steenberg, Buitenverwachting and Constantia Uitsig. Each estate features original Cape Dutch homesteads, oak-lined avenues and acres of vineyards producing award-winning wines which can be sampled during cellar tours.
Set on the south-eastern slopes of Table Mountain just a half-hour drive from the Cape Town city centre, the verdant Constantia Wine Valley offers a more intimate and very accessible alternative to the Cape Winelands and you can easily complete the wine route in a morning, followed by a superb lunch at one of the estates' restaurants.
When it comes to accommodation on your Constantia Wine Valley holiday, visitors tend to stay either in the village of Constantia or on Steenberg estate.
Constantia
Green and leafy Constantia is one of Cape Town's oldest and most affluent suburbs – a fact which is evident in its palatial homes, long driveways and manicured gardens. Here families that have been neighbours for generations greet each other while walking their dogs on the Constantia green belt, while groups of horse riders amble along its country lanes.
But it's not just locals who stay in Constantia – some of the suburb's most exclusive addresses also attract international visitors who prefer Constantia's peace and privacy to the sun-soaked glamour of the Atlantic Seaboard and its popular beaches.
One of the entrances to the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens lies conveniently in Constantia, while in the village centre itself you'll find art galleries, boutique stores, delis and several acclaimed restaurants serving everything from authentic French and Italian dishes to traditional South African cuisine.
Steenberg
In addition to its status as a premier wine estate and the oldest farm in the Constantia Wine Valley, Steenberg Estate also features an upmarket residential development whose houses have direct frontage onto the fairways of an 18-hole championship golf course. The beautiful Silvermine Nature Reserve, perfect hiking country, and the famously scenic Noordhoek Beach are just a short drive away.
