Selous
The Selous is the huge reserve in southern Tanzania, now called Nyerere National Park. A boat on the Rufiji, a walk, and a game drive are the usual three ways to spend the day.

It is a different trip from the Serengeti. There is no migration calendar to chase. Wild dogs, elephants in the palms, and the river are the reasons. Fly from Dar es Salaam.
The boat
The Rufiji is the signature. Hippo, crocodile, and animals coming to drink, seen from the water. The photograph of a boat passing a giraffe is the Selous people mean.
On foot
Walking is part of many camps. Say if you would rather stay in the boat and the vehicle. Both are honest ways to do the park.
The name
Quotes and maps may say Nyerere. It is the same landscape. We will use the name on the permit and the camp confirmation, and we will not pretend they are two parks.

Dry season. Wildlife is on the river. The best months for the boat and the walks.
The rains
Many camps close when the reserve floods. Do not plan a Christmas boat safari without checking which camps are open.

Health
The Selous is a malaria area, and tsetse flies are part of the woodland. Cover up, and see a clinic before you travel.
Flights
A light aircraft from Dar es Salaam is the comfortable way in. Soft bags and a weight limit. The drive is a long, dusty day.
