Malawi

Malawi is a small country with a huge lake, a warm welcome, and wildlife parks that have been deliberately brought back to life.

Why go

People call it the warm heart of Africa for the pace and the welcome, not for a slogan. The lake is the reason most trips exist. The parks are the reason to leave the beach for a few nights. Neighbours such as Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique see more visitors. Malawi is the quieter version of the same region, and it combines cleanly with any of them.

    Barefoot days on Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi covers about 30,000 square kilometres, roughly a fifth of the country, and it is Africa's third-largest freshwater lake. It is a UNESCO site, and it holds more fish species than any other lake, on the order of a thousand cichlids.

The shore is palm, pale sand, and water so clear that a first swim feels like a coastal resort, even though the country is landlocked. A lake week looks closer to a Seychelles or Mauritius rest than to a 5 a.m. game drive: sun, a kayak, and a lodge with its feet in the water.

Early May to late October is the kind window. Days are mild to warm, rain is scarce, and the malaria risk is lower than in the wet months. It is not zero.

    • A quiet island or village shore, without the crowds of the famous beach countries.
    • Beach lodges that are simple and well made, not a city hotel dropped on the sand.
    • Snorkelling, diving, kayaks, and canoes among the cichlids.
  • View on Otter Point at Lake Malawi National Park. Cape Maclear, Malawi.

Parks that were emptied, then restocked

By 1992 Majete Wildlife Reserve had lost its elephants to hunting and was close to empty. African Parks began the restoration in 2003. After Majete held, the same work moved to Liwonde National Park in 2015.

Liwonde's return list includes elephant, lion, hyena, hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, cheetah, buffalo, zebra, antelope, and black rhino. It is treated as Big Five country again. You look for them by vehicle, on a morning walk, or from a boat on the Shire.

The point of Liwonde is not a checklist. It is a small park, a river, and very few other vehicles. Majete, further south, is the same idea with only a couple of lodges.

    • Liwonde for the Shire River: elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a deck at the water.
    • Majete for a restored Big Five reserve and sunset boats.
    • Walks with a guide in the morning, drives later, boats when the river is the better view.

    Mumbo Island

Mumbo is a small island inside Lake Malawi National Park, off Cape Maclear. It is the place people mean when they want the lake without a village beach or a row of hotels.

You walk the shore or take a kayak around it. The water is the activity: snorkelling, a dive if you are qualified, and beachcombing. Rooms are rustic and comfortable rather than a large resort. It suits a couple, or anyone who wants the island to themselves for a few nights.

Cape Maclear is the lived-in alternative, a fishing village with beach lodges. Likoma Island, further up the lake, is another quiet base and is reached by boat or a short flight. Nkwichi, on the Mozambican shore of the same lake, is the remote version if the route already crosses that border.

    • Mumbo for a private island inside the national park.
    • Cape Maclear if you want a village and a beach lodge.
    • Likoma if you want an island with a mission church and fewer day boats.
    • Kayak, snorkel, and a walk. There is no game drive on Mumbo, and that is the point.

Easy to join to the neighbours

Malawi sits between Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique, with Zimbabwe and South Africa a flight away. A lake finish after a Luangwa walk, or a Liwonde safari before the Bazaruto islands, is a normal route rather than a stunt.

    • Fewer visitors than the famous parks next door.
    • Tanzania to the north, including a Zanzibar beach if the week is long enough.
    • South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to the south and west.

    On the water

Once you are on the lake, the day is whatever the wind allows. Boat trips, canoes, and kayaks are the gentle version. Snorkelling and diving are how you see the fish. Water-skiing, sailboarding, and stand-up boards are there at the busier lodges.

    • Boat, canoe, and kayak from almost every lake lodge.
    • Snorkel and dive for the cichlids.
    • Ski, sailboard, or paddle where the lodge keeps the kit.

Where to go

When to go

  • Sun setting over Lake Malawi at Cape Macclear, Malawi.

    May to October

The dry season, and the months to book if you can. Rain has stopped, the bush is opening, and the lake is at its easiest.

    • May: the start. Clearer roads, mild days, parks not yet full.
    • June and July: long sunny days, cold mornings, log fires, very few mosquitoes. Peak wildlife, still without a crowd.
    • August: the lake warms into swimming, kayaks, and long afternoons.
    • September: hot, dry, and the Lake of Stars festival on the shore for three days.
    • October: the last of the dry heat before storms build.
  • Peter's Twinspot - Malawi_S4E4672

    November to April

The rains. Come for birds and lower rates, not for a guaranteed beach. Ask which lodges are actually open before the international flight is bought.

    • November: the first storms, and migrant birds arriving from north of the equator.
    • December: hot and wet, especially around Christmas. A poor month for the lake.
    • January: daily thunderstorms. Most lake lodges close.
    • February: the green season. Orchids on the plateau, and young antelope in the parks.
    • March: still heavy, easing late in the month. Nyika is the park that can still make sense.
    • April: the last of the rains. Greener parks, fewer visitors, roads improving.

Travel advice

  • Peter's Twinspot - Malawi_S4E4672

    Money

The currency is the kwacha. US dollars are widely accepted at lodges, and small notes are more useful than a hundred-dollar bill when you are buying crafts or paying a boatman. Cards work more often in Lilongwe and Blantyre than on the lake or in a park.

    • Service is not added to lodge or restaurant bills. A tip is your choice, and it is noticed when the guiding was good.
    • Malawi is one of the more affordable countries in the region for meals, markets, and a carved souvenir. The safari camps are a different budget from the town.

    Getting there and around

Lilongwe takes the daily flights from Johannesburg and the regular links with Zambia, Tanzania, and Kenya, which is why a southern or East African safari often ends on this lake. Chileka, at Blantyre, is the airport for the south: Liwonde, Majete, and the southern shore.

Main roads are in fair shape and the country is small, so a road transfer is a reasonable way to see it. A light aircraft is the shortcut when you would rather not spend the day in the car. Boats reach the lake islands, and they are also how you get to Nkwichi on the Mozambican shore.

    The lake, up close

It feels like a tropical beach holiday without the salt. There is no ocean tide and no ocean current, which is why swimming off a lodge beach is so easy. The fish are the reason people put a mask on.

    • Summer days often sit around 20°C to 32°C. Winter days are milder, often about 15°C to 28°C, with cold mornings in the parks.
    • Bilharzia is a risk in still, reedy water. Swim where the lodge says it is fine, not off a random beach.
    • Malaria is present, including at the lake. The dry months are lower risk, not zero. See a clinic before you fly.
  • Lake Malawi, Malawi

Families, dress, and the bag ban

The lake and the parks suit older children and teenagers who will snorkel, kayak, and sit through a morning walk. Many of the wildlife areas are malarial, so a trip with very young children needs a frank talk with a clinic first.

Towns and villages are conservative. Shoulders and knees covered, for men and women, is the respectful habit away from the lodge beach. A light wrap, the chitenje, is what you will see women wearing. Swimwear stays on the sand.

Thin single-use plastic bags are banned. Pack with cloth bags or packing cubes, not a handful of shop bags around your shoes.

    Entry

Carry a passport valid for at least six months after you leave. Visa rules have changed more than once, so check them for your passport before you buy the flights. Extensions, when they are available, have been handled in Lilongwe or Blantyre.

    • English is the official language and is widely spoken. Chichewa is the language of most of the country.
    • About a fifth of the land is protected. The parks are real, even though the country is small and mostly rural.

Costs

Malawi is gentler on a budget than Botswana, but a park camp plus a lake lodge is still a planned safari, not a backpacker ferry ticket. The room on Mumbo or in Liwonde is the large line. Town meals and crafts are not.

A road trip around the lake is the lower-cost way to see the shore. A light aircraft to Likoma, a private guide, and a boat to an island camp are what move the total up.

Read the sample prices we publish, then ask for a quote. Park fees, boats, and the lake stay should be spelled out before anything is paid. International flights, visas, insurance, and tips sit outside those figures.
