Uganda is gorillas, chimpanzees, and a proper savannah, with the Nile at Murchison Falls. It is greener and more spread out than Rwanda.

Why go
A first trip is usually Bwindi for gorillas and one other park, not all three famous parks in a single week.
Bwindi
Mountain gorillas in the Impenetrable Forest. The trek can be steep and long. Permits are limited and should be in hand before you fly.
Queen Elizabeth
The Kazinga Channel boat, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, and a wide Rift Valley park. A useful bridge between the forest and a classic game drive.
Murchison Falls
The Nile forced through a gorge, with savannah game on the north bank and a boat to the base of the falls. The longest transfer of the usual trio.
Chimps
Kibale is the chimpanzee forest. Tracking is a morning in the trees, different from a gorilla visit, and worth it if you have the extra night.
Where to go
- BwindiThe gorilla park in the south-west. Different trailheads (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga) are not interchangeable. The lodge has to match the permit sector.
- Queen Elizabeth National ParkKazinga boat trips, crater lakes, and Ishasha's fig-tree lions. A natural second park after Bwindi.
- Murchison FallsThe north. A game drive, a boat to the falls, and a long but beautiful day from the south. Fly if the week is short.
When to go
June to September, and December to February
The drier months. Trails are firmer and savannah viewing is easier. Permits for these months go first.
March to May, and October to November
Rains. The forest is slippery and some savannah tracks slow down. Trekking still runs. Pack for mud.

Permits and sectors
A gorilla permit is tied to a date and, in practice, to a starting area. We line the lodge up with that. It is the main cost of the trip.
Roads
Uganda is a driving country unless you fly the long legs. Entebbe is the airport. A domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro saves a day on the Bwindi road.
Health
Malaria is present. Yellow fever vaccination is commonly required. See a clinic and carry the certificate.
Entry
East African tourist visas sometimes cover Kenya and Rwanda too, but you should confirm the current product before you rely on it.

Costs
The gorilla permit is the large fixed cost. Chimpanzee permits are separate and smaller. Lodges at Bwindi vary more than people expect.
Flying internally costs more and protects the days. A road trip is cheaper and slower.
