Why go

It takes more planning than Rwanda: longer flights, stricter permits, and camps that are not a road transfer from a capital hotel. Come for that, or choose Bwindi.

  Lowland gorillas

  Western lowland gorillas in parks such as Odzala-Kokoua. The trek and the habituation are different from a mountain-gorilla hour in Rwanda. You are in equatorial forest.

• 

  Forest elephants and buffalo

  Clearings, called bais, are where elephants and forest buffalo step into the open. A hide or a walk to a bai is the wildlife morning.

• 

  Remoteness

  Camps are fly-in. The reward is silence and a guiding team that has time. This is not a trip to combine casually with a beach the next day.

Where to go

• Odzala-KokouaThe best-known gorilla and bai area in the north of the Republic of the Congo. Camps are deep in the park and reached by light aircraft.
• The forest clearingsBais are the place you actually see animals in the open. Trails between them are the rest of the day, with a guide who knows the families.

When to go

• 

  The drier months

  Roughly December to February, and a mid-year window, are the easier trekking months. Rain never fully leaves an equatorial forest. Ask us for the camp's own best months before you choose dates.

• 

  Wet months

  Trails flood and flights are more likely to wait. Some camps close. If the dates are fixed by a permit, we say so before you pay for the international ticket.

Travel advice

  Planning

  Permits, charter seats, and vaccinations need lead time. This is not a last-minute add to a Kenya trip.

• 

  Health

  Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria protection is essential. A travel clinic should see the exact parks, not just the country name.

• 

  Fitness

  You will walk in humidity. Tell us about knees, heat, and any limit. We would rather change the park than pretend every trek is an easy hour.

• 

  Entry

  Visa rules for the Republic of the Congo are their own system. Confirm them close to departure, and allow time in Brazzaville if the routing needs it.
